Chechens are also fighting for Putin

A few days following the start of the counter-offensive, the government in Kiev reports minor successes. Ukrainian troops advanced up to seven kilometers on several sectors of the front. However, they have not yet reached the actual Russian defense lines, it was said yesterday from Ukraine.

From Russia’s point of view, however, the situation on the front was completely different: the Kremlin announced that three attacks by Ukrainian troops on the southern front had been repelled. There was initially no independent review of the current fighting.

The fact is that the Russian army is increasingly under pressure and needs more and more fighters. The Russian Defense Ministry yesterday contracted its first private army. The document was signed between the ministry and the special unit Achmat, it said. Achmat is the combat unit of Chechen ruler Ramzan Kadyrov, it includes tens of thousands of fighters. They have been deployed in Ukraine for months and are considered particularly brutal. However, the head of the notorious Wagner mercenaries, Yevgeny Prigozhin, refused a contract with the Kremlin. Apparently he doesn’t want to take responsibility for the military failures of the Russians.

Meanwhile, following the destruction of the Kachowka Dam, the situation in the flood plains remained tense. Only the International Atomic Energy Agency gave the all-clear: There was still enough water available to cool the reactor at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
