In a clip published on Kadyrov’s Telegram channel on Saturday, the authoritarian leader could be seen on a drive in the angular Tesla pickup. A machine gun is mounted on top of the loading platform, and Kadyrov allows himself to be photographed holding the weapon.
– This is undoubtedly one of the best cars in the world. I literally fell in love, says Kadyrov, who is president of the Russian republic of Chechnya and known for extravagant PR stunts.
Kadyrov is linked to a wide range of human rights violations and imposed sanctions by the United States. In Saturday’s message, he says he will donate the vehicle to the Russian forces that have invaded Ukraine.
– I am sure that this beast will give our soldiers many advantages, says Kadyrov, who has sent his own Chechen forces to the Ukraine war and is a close ally of Vladimir Putin.
Kadyrov claims he got the vehicle from Musk, but that has not been independently confirmed.
The AP news agency has not received a response to its request for comment from Tesla.
Kadyrov also used the opportunity to invite Musk to Chechnya.
– I don’t think the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will have anything against such a trip, he says.
