On Wednesday evening, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov was reportedly ordered to “actively engage in combat” and “liberate a number of localities”. They would have been sent to the front in Donetsk, Zaporijjia and Kherson, reports Het Laatste Nieuws.
The American think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suspects the Kremelin wants to replace Wagner’s soldiers with Chechen men.
If Chechen forces would allow Russia to resume attacks on multiple fronts, Kadyrov said he only had 7,000 troops in Ukraine. A number well below the tens of thousands of fighters of the Wagner militia.
Still according to the ISW, Putin would try to break the rapprochement between Prigozhin and Kadyrov: “It is possible that Putin perceived Kadyrov’s behavior as a threat. Putin or Russian military leaders may have ordered Kadyrov to be more active on the battlefield as revenge for trying to blackmail the Kremlin.”
