The program that offers discounts to Brazilians in search of cheaper popular cars has seen great growth in recent days, according to the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), and as disclosed this Monday (16), 64% of available resources have already been used by automakers.

The action was expected to last four months, but the high demand for automobiles has already led to the consumption of more than two-thirds of the proposed value in less than 15 days. Of the R$ 500 million made available for the benefit, the participating automakers have already used around R$ 320 million in discounts applied directly to consumers.

According to information released by the folder, the volume of resources used for the program grew 88% last weekend in relation to the balance released last Friday, June 16th. In addition to cars, the program also provides R$ 700 million in benefits for trucks and R$ 300 million for buses.

So far, these were the amounts authorized for each car manufacturer:

FCA Fiat Chrysler: BRL 130 million; Volkswagen: BRL 50 million; Peugeot Citroen: BRL 40 million; Renault: BRL 30 million; GM and Hyundai: BRL 20 million (each); Honda, Nissan and Toyota: BRL 10 million (each).

The list of cars covered by the program remains the same. 266 versions of 32 models that are eligible for discounts starting at R$2,000, valid only for new vehicles with market prices of up to R$120,000. Specific versions of the Fiat Mobi and Renault Kwid are the models with the biggest discount for consumers: R$ 8 thousand.

Manufacturers who apply the discount on consumer sales receive a tax credit that allows them to deduct taxes owed to the government. The purpose of the proposal is to mitigate the crisis in the sector, which, although it accounts for 20% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the manufacturing industry, has half of its installed capacity idle.

Criteria for car discounts

The federal government’s plan takes three factors into account when calculating the tax benefit for automakers: social (the cheaper the car, the greater the discount); environmental (less polluting cars get a bigger discount); and industrial density (the more domestic parts used in the car, the greater the discount).

During the first fifteen days of the program’s validity — that is, from June 5, 2023 — only individuals can purchase a car at a discount. From that period and while the resources last, legal entities will also be able to have access to the benefit.
