The government’s goal for more affordable prices this Easter was largely achieved, the Minister of Development, Kostas Skrekas, said, as the prices of the products included in the Easter Basket are the same or even cheaper than last year.
THE Kostas Skrekas he explained about the lamb that the aim was not to sell everything at prices below ten euros per kilo, but for the consumer to have options so that he can choose, either the cheapest or the most expensive, and this is something that has happened.
He pointed out that producer prices to livestock farmers were slightly higher than last year, however the ministry managed to squeeze the middlemen’s profit margin.
He also explained that there are many qualities and the consumer can choose which one he wants, while the controls by EFET and other mechanisms of the Ministry of Rural Development continue, to prevent arbitrary Greekization as it constitutes an unfair commercial practice.
The minister recalled the operation of the e-katanalotis platform which was enriched with 3,000 fast-moving products and is now much more functional. As an example, he mentioned the price of lamb on the platform, which ranges from 9.78 euros to 9.98 euros, while he underlined that the difference from the first to the fifth in the supermarket range is 14 euros.
According to newsit, the Minister referred to the government’s effort to de-escalate prices, which is partly paying off, as although some products are more expensive, others are cheaper, such as milk and cheese.
As an example, and based on food inflation data, Mr. Skrekas pointed out that with 100 euros in Greece in 2019, you bought food that today you buy products for 130 euros, i.e. there is an increase of around 30%.
