Russia – Many people believe that potatoes are an unhealthy food product, because they contain only calories. Therefore, it is removed from the diet so as not to contribute to weight gain.
According to Dr. Natalia Denisova, a Russian nutrition expert, some people fear high blood sugar levels, because potatoes are rich in starch. However, the claim that potatoes are not good for anyone at all is a myth.
She says: “Potatoes contain a high percentage of potassium, which is beneficial for those who suffer from high blood pressure and people who suffer from cardiovascular disease, because potassium helps lower blood pressure. In addition, potatoes are a mild diuretic.”
The doctor indicates that 100 grams of potatoes contain 568 mg of potassium, equivalent to 23 percent of the body’s daily need for this element. If we consider that a medium potato weighs 70 grams, then eating 2-3 potatoes provides the body with more than half of its daily need of potassium.
It is noteworthy that the World Health Organization recommends that adults should obtain 3.5 grams of potassium daily. The results of a study conducted by scientists at the University of Amsterdam Medical Center showed that potassium significantly reduces blood pressure in women who eat salty foods, as every gram of potassium reduces blood pressure by 2.4 mm of mercury. Potassium also reduces the risk of heart disease.
In addition, potatoes contain vitamins C, PP, and group B, and in addition to potassium, they contain calcium, magnesium, iron, and phosphorus.
According to her, to get the most benefit from potatoes, it is best to boil them or grill them with the skin on. Of course, heat treatment leads to the loss of a high percentage of vitamin C, but potassium and other beneficial substances remain.
The doctor points out that the disadvantage of potatoes is the high glycemic index, which can lead to high blood sugar levels. Therefore, diabetics are advised not to consume it excessively.
