The new “memory” functionality should be generalized on a date not communicated by OpenAI.
ChatGPT wants to be more respectful of privacy. Generative artificial intelligence from the publisher OpenAI comes to announce this February 13 the upcoming launch of a new feature called “Memory with ChatGPT”.
Concretely, the conversational agent will be able to keep a trace of your exchanges in memory to adapt its subsequent responses. Tested with a limited sample of users – in paid or free version – this feature will be available to everyone on an unspecified date.
According to the screenshots shared by OpenAI, ChatGPT will, for example, be able to remember that you “have a two-year-old daughter, called Lina”, who “loves jellyfish”.

More precise than custom instructions
This new memory complements the personalized instructions, already present since July and allowing you to specify your preferences in the settings.
Two sections exist in this space: “What would you like ChatGPT to know regarding you to provide better answers?” and “How would you like ChatGPT to respond?”. The new memory function is activated directly using user requests and is presented as much finer than personalized instructions.
ChatGPT can now pass on what it learns between chats, allowing it to provide more relevant answers… When chatting with ChatGPT, you can ask it to remember something specific or let it retrieve the answers itself. details. ChatGPT’s memory will improve the more you use it and you will start to notice improvements over time.
Memory with ChatGPT will be enabled by default but it will be possible to deactivate it – temporarily or permanently. More so, users will be able to clear memory in settings or even clear a specific query in chat history with ChatGPT.
Custom memory
Finally, this new functionality will be integrated into each personalized chatbot in a distinct way. Offered to ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Enterprise subscribers since November 2023, this option offers the possibility of creating a tailor-made conversational agent specialized in a specific field or subject.
GPT Books helps you find your next read. When memory is enabled, it remembers your preferences, like your favorite genres or favorite books, and adapts its recommendations accordingly, without the need to enter them repeatedly.
Lately, ChatGPT “unfortunately” shared to a user the passwords and identifiers of a pharmaceutical company. A simple bug that is not likely to recur, promises OpenAI. Hopefully ChatGPT will be able to feign a memory lapse if asked for sensitive information.
