A non-human researcher appears for the first time among the ten most influential researchers published each year by the scientific journal Nature. The ChatGPT conversational robot supported by AI (artificial intelligence) has indeed obtained a place in the list, which therefore this year has eleven names.
“ChatGPT has dominated the news this year and its influence is felt across science and society“, underlines Richard Monastersky, editor-in-chief of Nature. “He helped write scientific papers – sometimes in secret. He created content for presentations, grant applications, and courses, wrote computer code, and served as a sounding board for research ideas“, writes Nature in an article dedicated to ChatGPT.
The inclusion of the chatbot in the top ten is therefore “a recognition of the profound ways in which generative artificial intelligence influences the development and progress of science“, note Richard Monastersky.
The coin, however, has its other side. ChatGPT certainly has “hallucinated“facts and references”but above all, it stimulated people’s imagination“, according to Nature. The possibilities offered by ChatGPT type systems in the future are not yet very clear, emphasizes Nature. “But the generative AI revolution has begun. And there will be no going back.“
