Previously restricted to paid users, ChatGPT’s voice chat feature has been Released by OpenAI for all Generative AI free plan users. The news was announced by the company on X (formerly Twitter). Users simply log into the app and tap the headphones icon to start voicing their questions to ChatGPT. It is still possible to customize the AI voice.

OpenAI’s voice chat applies its text-to-speech model, trying to replicate human cadence. The company says its collaboration with Whisper incorporates its open-source speech recognition software to transcribe the user’s spoken words into text.

In the ad post example, the chatbot is asked to calculate how many pizzas would it take to feed 778 people following a training session. The answer is 195 pizzas, says the AI, in an advertisement that makes fun of the fact that the company has, precisely, 778 employees.

It is worth remembering that the last few days have been complicated for OpenAI, with the resignation of CEO Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, who were announced as new members of Microsoft’s AI research team, while the startup’s board was confused between CEOs interim. Apparently, however, everything went back to square one this Wednesday, as both returned to the company. Altman resumed his previous role, now with a new initial board consisting of Bret Taylor, Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo.
