OpenAI has updated its Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot ChatGPT with a new custom instructions feature, with which users can add preferences or requirements for the chatbot to take them into account and remember their tastes and preferences, in order to offer responses tailored to their needs.

The technology company led by Sam Altman continues to introduce new features in order to offer a better experience to users and, above all, better personalized responses for each user and their needs.

Within this framework, ChatGPT has added the new custom instructions feature, which allows you to add preferences or requirements so that ChatGPT remembers them when generating your responses and adapts to those needs.

Until now, every time a user starts a new conversation with ChatGPT, they have to explain what they need in detail, such as the format of the response, their preferences or specific needs. This is because the ‘chatbot’ does not remember any type of user information.

However, with custom instructions, OpenAI offers a possibility to customize the ‘chatbot’. Once the user preference instructions have been entered, when a conversation starts ChatGPT will take this into account in its responses.

As OpenAI has explained in a statement on its website, this function is designed with the aim of avoiding having to repeat preferences or information in each conversation. In fact, as the company has clarified, they have understood “the essential role of maneuverability” to allow the models to “effectively reflect the various contexts and unique needs of each person.”

As exemplified by OpenAI, one case where this feature might be useful is a teacher creating a lesson plan. With personalized instructions, the teacher might detail that he is preparing material for science students in a specific course. Thus, ChatGPT would take it into account for its answers without the need for the user to enter this nuance in each question.

The same is true for a developer, who can detail what code they usually want to code in without having to specify it in every conversation.

Moreover, you can also determine how ChatGPT should respond. That is, with custom instructions it can be configured to respond, for example, with tables, with a list, or describing the pros and cons of each option to offer a comparison.

This feature is now available in beta for all Plus plan subscribers. However, OpenAI has detailed that it will be expanded to all users “in the coming weeks”.
