In a groundbreaking move that signals a shift in the digital landscape, ChatGPT has unveiled its own search engine, daring to challenge the longstanding supremacy of Google, a name that has become synonymous with online searching for decades.
OpenAI, the innovative tech company behind the renowned chatbot ChatGPT, officially introduced “ChatGPT Search” on Thursday. This advanced iteration of the chatbot will empower users to access the most current information available across the vast expanse of the internet.
The results from user queries closely resemble what one might typically encounter on a conventional Google search. For instance, typing in “Chinese food” generates a compilation of reviews for nearby dining establishments, while seeking vacation advice for Costa Rica yields relevant travel blogs and hotel recommendations. Additionally, the tool emphasizes its capability to deliver real-time updates for queries demanding immediate answers—covering topics such as live sports scores, fluctuating stock prices, and current weather conditions.
In an effort to enhance reliability, the tool not only summarizes the gathered information but also provides proper citations for the sources utilized. To facilitate this launch, OpenAI successfully negotiated agreements with prominent media organizations, including The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and Vox, ensuring their content features prominently among the search results.
During an engaging public Q&A on Reddit celebrating the rollout of ChatGPT Search, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised the product as a significant enhancement over existing search formats.
“For many queries, I find it to be a way faster/easier way to get the information I’m looking for,” Altman remarked, emphasizing its potential especially for searches that demand complex research. “I also look forward to a future where a search query can dynamically render a custom web page in response!”

This was confirmed by OpenAI’s vice president of engineering, Srinivas Narayanan, during the Reddit Q&A. However, OpenAI has not disclosed the identities of the other search engines participating in this collaboration, asserting that ChatGPT Search will employ a blend of search technologies to curate its results.
In terms of market penetration, ChatGPT has achieved modest yet notable progress in encroaching upon Google’s considerable 91% share of the search engine market. A September survey conducted by investment firm Evercore, involving 1,300 participants, revealed that 8% opted for ChatGPT over Google as their preferred search engine—a significant increase from just 1% in June.
Although these gains may appear sluggish, and a single survey does not encapsulate the extensive market trends influencing Google’s $175 billion search advertising empire, this shift marks an important milestone considering Google’s historically unassailable position. Google’s overwhelming presence is so dominant that even Microsoft’s previous attempts in February to augment Bing’s search results using ChatGPT—a major strategic differentiator—resulted in a negligible market share increase of less than one percentage point. It now seems that Microsoft and OpenAI have altered their strategy, leveraging Bing as the engine that powers ChatGPT’s search capabilities, rather than the other way around.
Despite these evolutional gains, Google continues to eclipse its competitors by a significant margin. Alphabet, Google’s parent firm, refrains from disclosing precise statistics regarding its search queries, but estimates suggest they number in the billions each month. Without exact figures, it’s clear their user engagement dwarfs that of ChatGPT and similar services. For instance, ChatGPT reported 200 million weekly users, translating to approximately 800 million monthly, while Perplexity achieved 10 million monthly active users as of February—a commendable figure for a startup, yet minuscule when juxtaposed with Google’s towering stature.
Nonetheless, there exists a prevailing sentiment in Silicon Valley that the advent of AI has the potential to fundamentally transform the nature of search engines. The precise mechanics of such a transformation remain largely speculative, even for some of the leading figures in the AI landscape, including those at ChatGPT. When asked by a Reddit user about distinguishing features between AI-powered search engines and traditional models, OpenAI’s chief product officer Kevin Weil candidly acknowledged it is still early in the development stage.
