ChatGPT and some controversial agricultural topics, an article by Mr. Philippe Stoop
Gleaned from the canvas 973
« GMOs, Glyphosate, wheat yield… what is the opinion of ChatGPT ? by Mr. Philippe Stoop on European Scientist is essential reading for anyone interested in this new social phenomenon with a ” agricole ».
Mr. Philippe Stoop questioned the program “ on subjects as divisive as GMOs, Glyphosate, but also on expert debates such as the stagnation of wheat yields, soil depletion or even monoculture ».
Analysis of responses – that you will find here – is exciting and, of course, relevant.
To understand the rest, Mr. Philippe Stoop is the inventor of the concept of ” agrologie which is to agronomy what astrology is to astronomy.
He concludes his analysis as follows:
« In relation to our original question, which was to see if Chat GPT promotes the legitimization of fanciful theses, the results are moderately reassuring: certainly, the robot has on the whole leaned a little in favor of agrologist theses, but much less than the imbalance of opinions expressed on the Web would have us fear. On subjects where there is really a structured scientific argument on both sides, such as on GMOs, Chat GPT leaves little room for the most dubious theses. It is interesting to note that the subjects where Chat GPT is least relevant are those where there is no head-on debate, such as wheat yield or monoculture. On these themes, the agronomists having allowed the agrologists to develop a pseudo-scientific discourse on a fantasized agriculture, without stooping to contradict them, they thus leave Chat GPT (and most of the human public) disarmed in the face of false information, the inconsistency of which is not obvious to a non-specialist.
Despite his human sides, Chat GPT still retains for the moment two very pleasant qualities compared to a real agrologist:
-
When asked a disturbing question, he tries to answer it, rather than answering the question he would have preferred to be asked.
But at the speed where evolves Chat GPTit may only be a postponement… »
We will conclude for our part that it is essential for the rationalists of agriculture, etc. to show up on the Internet and not leave room for charlatans alone.
