This Friday, around 1:50 p.m., firefighters from the Luxembourg emergency zone were alerted to a large fire within the Château des Épioux grounds in Florenville.

Around twenty men from the Florenville, Neufchâteau, Bertrix, Libramont, Virton and Carigan (FR) barracks were called to the scene. According to a witness present on the scene, the cause of the disaster came from a wood stove. “We were called to a living room fire. When the first crews arrived, the entire ground floor was completely on fire. Many resources were sent to the site. The final assessment is that a third of the castle is completely damaged on all levels,” comments the commander of the emergency zone, Stéphane Thiry, by telephone.

A chimney fire that got out of hand

Still according to the emergency services, the fire originated in a chimney (hence the rumor of the wood stove). Fortunately, the remaining parts of the castle were able to be preserved. “The building was occupied at the time of the fire. The people who occupied the premises were taken care of by the Municipality of Florenville and will be rehoused,” specifies the commander. Firefighters from Carignan (FR) were also called to assist the fire site, much to the relief of the teams. “The French allowed us not to deforce our relief zone. There were still 5 barracks mobilized. Their intervention allowed us to provide routine assistance without problem. The teams worked very well, the objectives were achieved,” he concludes. The fire was under control of firefighters around 3:30 p.m. They are expected to remain on site for several more hours.
