“With a few more degrees, it would probably have been a different story, but we can still be happy with the show on offer this year again with several meeting records”emphasizes the meeting director Kim Gevaert.

Here’s what you need to know from Saturday.

McLaughlin-Levrone and demonstration

Even though she competed in two races mounted for her, due to not being able to line up in the Diamond League, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone made her mark for her debut in Brussels. The double Olympic champion in the 400m hurdles dominated the 400m in spectacular fashion on Friday (49.11) before repeating the feat in the 200m where she had to settle for a time of 22.40.

No personal record to get our teeth into, but the second overall time over the shortest distance, Brittany Brown having shown herself to be faster (22.20) in the Diamond League final, and a good waffle to celebrate the end of the season!

Favorites at the rendezvous

Undefeated over 1,500m since June 17, 2021, Faith Kipyegon won a fifth Diamond League trophy on Saturday after her victory in 3.54.75. A time that allows her to erase the Memorial record that had stood since 2003.

“It wasn’t an easy race but I’m very happy with myselfthe Kenyan emphasizes. I didn’t think about the world record at all this time, it was too cold.”

Beatrice Chebet, who beat Kipyegon in the 5,000m final at the Paris Olympics, also lived up to her status as Olympic champion in the distance by dominating the race in 14.09.82, also a meeting record.

Femke Bol then got her hands on a fourth end-of-season trophy. The Dutchwoman, who suffered from Covid a few days earlier, did well with a time of 52.45 in the 400m hurdles.

Femke Bol has achieved another success in Brussels.

“It was a bit chilly but the atmosphere in the stadium quickly made me forget it.comments the Olympic bronze medalist. I hope I get the chance to race against Sydney (McLaughlin) in the Diamond League next year. But first, I’m looking forward to a two-week holiday in Sicily!”

Eliott Crestan ends the season with a new top time in the 800m at the Van Damme Memorial: “I know what I still need to improve…”

Finally, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (12.38 in the 100m hurdles), Nina Kennedy (4.88m in the pole vault), Haruka Kitaguchi (66.13m in the javelin), Emmanuel Wanyonyi (1.42.70 in the 800m) Alison dos Santos (47.93 in the 400m hurdles), Gianmarco Tamberi (2.34m in the high jump) and Pedro Pichardo (17.33m in the triple) also fulfilled their contract.

Two big surprises

In the 200m, Kenny Bednarek knocked off Paris gold medallist Letsile Tebogo. The American, Olympic vice-champion, clocked a time of 19.67 (+ 0.7), one tenth off his record, compared to 19.80 for his rival.

It wasn’t easy to stay focused after the Olympics.

“It was not easy to stay focused after the Olympics.Tebogo admitted after the race. I still have to get used to being in the spotlight.”

Leonardo Fabbri, who had missed out on his Games (5th), rectified the situation in Brussels. The Italian shot putter surprised triple Olympic champion Ryan Crouser (22.79 m) with a new national record (22.98 m) which erases the performance of Joe Kovacs, at home, in 2022 (22.61 m).
