It’s a damn shame that this first live album from Charley Crockett is missing a bit of material from the actual show on November 14, 2022 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville – and not just in quantitative terms.
Because, as far as it can be judged from this audio document, what we generally hear seems to be absolutely true: the dapper country man is great on record – but even better on stage.
Although “only” 24 of the original 29 numbers on the set list are performed in great sound quality (including impressive video recordings) (and do not want to offer a completely coherent arc of suspense in Crockett’s tirelessly exhausting ethos), the remaining selection of the pieces played in the Ryman makes a difference However, there’s nothing wrong with it, even if the finale of the set seems relatively unspectacular in its selection and performance.
Without claiming to be complete, it is an absolute joy to hear the truly perfect playfulness of Crockett, who shows so much presence even with minimalist means, and his ideally tuned band Blue Drifterson display here – how incredibly soft it is Time of the Cottonwood Trees how soulful melting can be even more soulful, or with how much drive alone Cowboy Candy, Music City USA or Trinity River how darn entertaining and entertaining Crockett’s few announcements demonstrate his attractive charisma.
