This term runs from June 1 to November 30, 2024. Charles Michel, who took office on December 1, 2019, was also reappointed as president of the euro zone summit for the same term.
His two predecessors, the Belgian Herman Van Rompuy (2010-2014) and the Pole Donald Tusk (2014-2019) had also been reappointed for a second term, the last authorized by the treaties.
It was up to French President Emmanuel Macron, whose country holds the six-monthly presidency of the Council of the EU, and who is part of the same political group as Charles Michel (Renew Europe, liberals), to formulate the proposal. No other expressions of interest were made known. This re-election was therefore akin to a formality.
