Today, Monday, King Charles III made a pledge to continue serving the citizens of the Commonwealth countries, to the best of his ability, while he is receiving treatment for cancer, which forced him to reduce his official obligations.
The 75-year-old king explained that he was deeply touched by the support and encouragement he has received since announcing his illness, and added in a pre-recorded message broadcast on the occasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Commonwealth, “I can only continue to serve you to the best of my ability throughout the Commonwealth.”
In his message, Charles III paid tribute to the Commonwealth’s “diversity” which constitutes, in his words, its greatest strength in confronting today’s major challenges, from global warming to technological developments.
The King continued, “We must work together to understand each other’s views, especially regarding inequality and injustice that still resonate today, at a time when the United Kingdom and the monarchy are under pressure in relation to their colonial past.”
Less than a year and a half following his mother, Elizabeth II, succeeded to the throne of Britain, and nine months following his coronation, the king began treatment following announcing that he had a cancer whose type was not revealed.
Charles’ disease was discovered during a recent medical intervention to treat prostate enlargement.
