Charles III official head of state of Australia

A day following the proclamation ceremonies in London, Charles III. was officially appointed as the new head of state in Australia today. The corresponding statement was presented at a ceremony in Parliament in the capital Canberra by Governor General David Hurley, as reported by the Australian news agency AAP. There were members of parliament and senators from all political camps.

Following the proclamation, the British national anthem was played with the new line “God Save the King” – the flags, which had been flown at half-staff, were raised once more. Many people had gathered in front of the parliament building to attend the proclamation.

Charles III was ceremoniously proclaimed as British King yesterday in London. He had already automatically become king with the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on Thursday. In her capacity as Queen of Australia, British Queens or Kings are represented in the Commonwealth country by the Governor-General.

Holiday on September 22nd

Meanwhile, Australia will mark a national day of mourning on September 22 to commemorate Elizabeth II. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced this today, according to the AAP news agency. This should give people the opportunity to pay their last respects to the late Queen. Before that, he will travel to England with Hurley to attend the Queen’s state funeral on September 19.
