In Charleroi, we take care of our image. The mayor, Paul Magnette, and the tourism alderman, Maxime Hardy unveiled an extra-large inscription of Charleroi which will now take pride of place on the station esplanade. Nothing very innovative. And yet, this inscription (at 30,000 euros all the same), in the tradition of “Hollywood or Amsterdam” (it’s not me who says it but the city councilors), betrays a desire of the city to equip itself with ‘a new image. “If we want to amplify the positive tourism dynamic, we had to have visual markers,” explains Maxime Hardy. So it’s all just a question of image? “95% of the photos of the city are taken in 5% of the territory, that is to say in Dampremy, in front of the industrial remains. But Charleroi is not limited to that. If all the influencers might take a photo of themselves in front of the new inscription and this allowed us to rediscover the station and the Sambre quays, we would be delighted,” adds Paul Magnette.
