Charleroi Police Officers Trial: Updates, Indictments, and Releases

UPDATE 3:50 p.m.: The three police officers were released by the council chamber, but the prosecution appealed this decision. They therefore remain in prison while awaiting a decision from the indictment chamber.

Gaëtan W., Frédéric B. and Fabrice V. appeared Thursday morning before the Charleroi council chamber. The latter have been indicted since Tuesday as part of an investigation lasting several months carried out by Committee P, the “police of police”, under the leadership of an investigating judge Carole. Forgery and breach of trust are the common thread in this case of alleged “rogues”.

Frédéric B. has just been released on parole this Friday, confirms his lawyer Me Fabian Lauvaux. “For my client, we are very far from the catastrophic situation described, it is the problem of passing several people in front of the council chamber”, the lawyer told us Wednesday evening, before going to plead for the release of his client on the following day. According to him, he is accused of having used a service vehicle for private purposes (breach of trust), of having incorrectly encoded his schedules (forgery) and of having committed an offense relating to the storage of weapons – which is normally punishable by a fine.

Fabrice V., also prosecuted for violation of professional secrecy and illicit consultation of a database, is also conditionally released, we learn. His lawyer, Mr. Donatangelo, also requested his release on Thursday.

The Charleroi public prosecutor’s office might still appeal this decision. He had requested their continued detention.

But it is the case of Gaëtan W. which raises the most questions in this affair: the police officer is also placed under arrest warrant for “criminal association” in the same file as the search which led to the shooting from Lodelinsart on March 18, 2024, last Monday. Fatal shooting for Jonathan S., of the Special Units, aged 36 and father of a family. He was questioned on Thursday, like his colleagues and his release was requested, but also on Friday morning for this criminal association.
