Charleroi Police GSA Deployment: False Alarm with Fake Weapons at Place de la Digue

Numerous flashing lights and a large police deployment might be observed at Place de la Digue, in downtown Charleroi, next to the Christmas market this Tuesday morning. The GSA (Surveillance and Support Group) intervened with riot shields, bulletproof vests and semi-automatic weapons pointed at a building adjacent to the square. What happened ?

A passerby saw two people walking near the square with weapons and raised the alarm. According to our information, one of the two suspects had just pointed a gun at the head of the customer of a nearby business, before going to hide further away.

Immediately, the police deployed a large device “to see what was going on”, reports Laurent Van Doren, head of the ZP Charleroi. Hence the deployment of the GSA, who first thought that the suspects were hidden in the underground parking lot of La Digue, before seeing them in a neighboring building. “We were finally able to arrest two people. They were in fact fake weapons! We will have to clarify the situation, but the incident is closed.”

More fear than harm, therefore, except perhaps for the poor lady who left a store without asking anyone for anything.
