Charges against Strache’s ex-driver in an expense affair

In the expenses affair surrounding the former FPÖ party leader and Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache, according to “Kurier” there is a first charge: A former driver of Strache and former blue Viennese councilor has to go to court for false testimony, like his lawyer Meinhard Novak of the newspaper confirmed on Friday.

The affair became public in September 2019, a few days before the National Council election. The basis was an anonymous ad. Strache is suspected of having financed his private life to a large extent with party funds from the time he took over the party chairmanship in 2006 until the end of May 2019, in which he and former employees are said to have declared private invoices from him as professional expenses using bogus receipts. Strache rejects the allegations. In addition to Strache, other FPÖ representatives are also being investigated. A judgment by the Vienna Higher Regional Court (OLG) recently showed that the total damage, according to investigators, should amount to at least 1.032 million euros.
