NEW YORK — New York Yankees reliever Aroldis Chapman was left off the team’s roster for the American League Division Series because he missed practice Friday.
Manager Aaron Boone confirmed Sunday that the Cuban right-hander – a seven-time All-Star – is in Miami instead of Yankee Stadium and that he did not present an acceptable justification.
“I’m disappointed,” Boone said, adding that a penalty is not out of the question.
The Yankees will face the Cleveland Guardians in a best-of-five series starting Tuesday.
Recovered from a broken foot, infielder Matt Carpenter would likely make New York’s roster, Boone said. Meanwhile, outfielder Andrew Benintendi is in doubt following having surgery on his hand. Infielder DJ LeMaheiu’s status is uncertain as he recovers from a finger injury.
Gerrit Cole will start for the Yankees on Tuesday, followed by Nestor Cortes in Game 2 and Luis Severino in Game 3.
Boone anticipates a three-pitcher rotation once morest the Guardians.
