MEXICO CITY.— The periódico The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, deceived Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and turned himself in.
According to the media, Guzmán López wanted to avoid a violent endingThe WSJ highlights that “El Chapo’s son wanted to turn himself in,” adding that he was “the financial brain behind the Sinaloa Cartel.”
The WSJ adds that “He and his three brothers” inherited the cartel, after “El Chapo” was captured in 2016.
It mentions that “the Mexican criminal group was responsible for sending billions of dollars worth of fentanyl across the U.S. border, fueling a national addiction to a synthetic opioid that has devastated communities across the United States.”
According to the WSJ, Guzmán López raised the stakes: he would work with the United States to capture “El Mayo.”
The American newspaper quotes Oscar Hagelsieb, former senior agent of the Bureau of Investigations of the Department of Homeland Security (HSI) in the border city of El Paso, Texas:
“Young members of a cartel family don’t necessarily want the fear and stress of leading a cartel. They know what it takes to be part of the family and to be part of the cartel, and that is violence and chaos,” he told the outlet.
Sources told the WSJ that Guzmán López persuaded “El Mayo” to go on a flight, in order to review alleged land and clandestine runways in northern Mexico.
