Chaos, anger and solidarity at the kyiv children’s hospital attacked by Russia

kyiv, Jul 8 (EFE).- A Russian missile attack on kyiv today completely destroyed one of the buildings of one of the most important children’s clinics in the Ukrainian capital, causing scenes of chaos, panic and helplessness, as well as displays of solidarity from hundreds of residents, soldiers and workers who came to bring food and water and joined in the debris removal efforts.

According to Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klychko, two adults have been confirmed dead so far in the Okhmaddit children’s hospital, one of them a doctor. At least 16 people have been injured, including seven children.

“My son Sasha was in the traumatology ward. There was an explosion and we had to get out very quickly. There were many injured children under the rubble,” Natalia Sheyán told EFE as she waited outside the hospital with her child to be transferred to her home region, Chernihiv, north of kyiv.

Sheyan explained that her son must return for treatment within a month, but she fears that this will not be possible due to the destruction caused by the attack. “His doctor also has a head injury that he suffered while protecting another child during the explosion,” added the visibly affected mother.

“I don’t know what else to say, I’m in shock and I can’t understand how they can attack a hospital with children,” said the woman before putting her arms around her son once more.

Around them, a multitude of ambulances occupied the closed street transporting the children in the most precarious situation. Fire trucks entered the perimeter of the hospital to continue clearing the rubble.

A human chain for clearing debris

On the bricks and ironwork of the hospital wing completely destroyed by the Russian bombing, firefighters, rescue workers, hospital doctors and ordinary volunteers without uniforms formed a human chain that stretched towards another area less affected by the attack.

Pieces of concrete, pipes torn out by the impact and other fragments of what had been a building only a few hours earlier were passed from hand to hand, trying to clear the area in case a victim appeared.

Others entered the compound carrying jugs and bottles of water.

Faced with the growing crowds, a police officer with a megaphone asked civilians to leave the area to make way for the rubble-clearing machinery and give more space to the professionals.

Other wings of the hospital suffered serious damage to their facades and exterior rooms. Next to one of these buildings, medical personnel were distributing first aid material for the slightly injured who had not left the scene.

At least ten dead in the capital

At least a dozen people were killed in the Ukrainian capital on Monday as a result of a massive Russian missile attack in broad daylight, which caused damage to several residential areas of the city. This was the first massive attack once morest kyiv following several weeks without lethal Russian bombings.

The missile strikes have caused a stir in other districts of the capital. “This is the third time already,” the owner of a burger joint near the centre of kyiv told EFE when asked regarding the effects of the bombing on his business.

Shop owners swept up broken windows and a street vendor continued to display her fruit as police cordoned off the road, which was covered in pieces of metal from damaged buildings.

The missile launches once morest kyiv have been accompanied by attacks on other Ukrainian cities.

The worst hit, apart from the capital, has been the industrial town of Krivi Rig, in central Ukraine, where President Volodymyr Zelensky is from. Ten people have died there as a result of the Russian bombing.

According to President Zelensky, Russia has attacked the Ukrainian cities of Krivi Rig, Dnipro (center) and Sloviansk and Kramatorsk (east) this morning with more than 40 missiles of various types.

One person died in Dnipro, according to the mayor.

This latest massive attack comes on the eve of the annual NATO summit in Washington, where the main topic of discussion will be the Alliance’s support for Ukraine in the face of Russian military aggression.
