Russian tactics in the war once morest Ukraine have changed significantly. This is shown by data from fallen Russians since the beginning of the war.

In the war of aggression once morest Ukraine, former prisoners and reservists and fewer regular soldiers are now dying for Russia in particular. This is what the BBC and the independent Russian media organization Mediazona report following joint research.

According to the research, in the first three months following the start of the war it was mainly 21-year-old professional soldiers who died at the front. In the meantime, the average number of dead Russian fighters has changed significantly. In the past three months, it is mainly former prisoners who have died, aged 34, who were recruited from the prisons with a bonus and freedom as a lure.

In the last three months, 1,236 such former prisoners have died, plus 752 Wagner mercenaries, 780 mobilized civilians and 484 volunteers who have volunteered following the invasion. In contrast, there are 148 officers killed and 398 privates and non-commissioned officers. According to research, however, 792 officers and 2,279 privates and NCOs, 280 volunteers and only 22 Wagner mercenaries died in the first three months.

Russia deploys trained soldiers less frequently

In total, the BBC and Mediazona count at least 25,000 dead Russian fighters since the beginning of the war. However, the two media only include fallen fighters in their research whose deaths they can prove with certainty. They therefore point out that the number of those actually killed will be significantly higher. The Ukrainian government speaks of almost 220,000 Russian victims, the Russian government claims that only 6,000 Russian fighters have been killed so far, reports the BBC.

Jack Watling, an expert at the British Royal United Service Institute (RUSI), assesses the situation for the BBC as soldiers who are not professionally trained and are currently dying the most frequently would be deployed like “disposable troops”. They are designed to wear down Ukrainian forces and locate Ukrainian artillery positions for later attacks. “They are sent to war expecting to die,” Watling said. Trained soldiers are used by Russia to carry out attacks only when conditions are favorable to them.
