Changing Car Habits: The Influence of Price on Vehicle Choices and Mobility Preferences

Change yes, but not just anyhow. In a study carried out by the Yougov Institute and commissioned by the startup Hiflow, on more than 1,000 users taking the car at least once a week, motorists say they are ready to modify the use of their vehicle. They are 48% to agree to reduce their speed and 36% to favor alternative mobility. It is even 56% among 18-24 year olds. Results that have ” surprised “ the startup specializing in home delivery of vehicles. But all these decisions are often motivated or induced by one factor: price. It is also, for almost 80% of users, the number one criterion of choice when buying a vehicle.

Automotive: slow start for retrofitted electric cars

Electricity still very marginal

The cost has already been widely pointed out by Deloitte in a previous study at the beginning of the year, which showed that 68% of users were ready to put less than 30,000 euros in a new car. A demand that does not match the reality of the market, where prices have increased with the crisis in semiconductors and the rise in the cost of energy. The average price of a new vehicle is currently 32,000 euros, with a higher range on electric vehicles, between 35,000 and 40,000 euros on average.

It is therefore not surprising to see that only 22% of motorists see electric as a priority. Only 15% would like an electric motor, which corresponds to current sales trends in France. To reduce costs, the French prefer other avenues such as second-hand goods, for more than a third of them, but also leasing. Among 18-24 year olds, this rate rises to 41%, a figure linked in particular to their lower purchasing power.

Proximity to points of sale, no longer a priority

If the electric is not unanimous, 64% of users think that accelerating innovation on cars and alternative fuels will be the right solution to deal with global warming. Alternative fuels are also requested by certain manufacturers, including car manufacturers such as Porsche. Synthetic fuels produced from green hydrogen have thus been authorized by the European Commission but their use seems costly and unlikely, had estimated the Atomic Energy Commission (CEA).

More than a third of French people believe that it will be necessary to produce fewer cars and only 15% of them think that more regulation is necessary. A survey that confirms the strong reluctance towards the establishment of Low Emission Zones (ZFE) in French cities.

Electric cars: how France will protect its industry once morest China and the United States

Finally, another major point of the study, proximity to the point of sale comes last with only 9% of users who mentioned it. A result largely explained by the boom in online vehicle purchases and that the American Tesla uses very widely by having very few car dealerships. This result might also give pride of place to Chinese manufacturers wishing to establish themselves on the French market by offering vehicles that are much cheaper without going through traditional points of sale.
