Changes Coming for Photovoltaic Panel Owners: What You Need to Know Before 2024

A change is coming for owners of photovoltaic panels. In Wallonia, on January 1st, we will have to say goodbye to the famous counter that is running backwards. The rules change. They will be a little less advantageous. As a result, many are rushing to have their signs installed before the new rules are introduced.

Frédéric Labis’ order books are full. He is an installer of photovoltaic panels and for him, business is going well. “We have 4 installations planned per day for the next few monthss”. And for good reason, from January 1, 2024, the counter that turns upside down will be over in Wallonia.

To continue to benefit from the counter which is running backwards until 2030, it will therefore be necessary to have its installation certified before December 31. From next year, Wallonia will therefore align itself with Flanders and Brussels. This new system will a priori be less advantageous even if the purchase of solar panels will continue to reduce your electricity bill. And even more, if you adapt your way of consuming. “You can run your washing machines and your dishwasher during the day, you can program them. It’s relatively simple“, says Benjamin Wilkin. He is a director of common energy, a renewable energy consulting company. You can also produce your domestic hot water with a small system that picks up excess solar production during the day. If we go towards electric vehicles, we can also imagine smart charging“.

You can also adapt your installation by placing, when possible, panels to the east and west of your roof to ensure solar electricity from morning until night.
