La Vinotinto reported this Friday, August 30, that defender Jhon Chancellor will miss the South American Qualifiers matches against Bolivia and Uruguay due to an injury.

The Venezuelan player suffered discomfort in his right knee during a match between his team, Universidad Católica, against Barcelona Sporting Club of the LigaPro of Ecuador, which is why he had to leave the field.

Following medical examinations, the report determined that he had an injury to his right knee and that his recovery time will be 12 weeks, according to a statement from the Universidad Católica club.

“All of us who make up the Cammarata Family wish John a speedy and satisfactory recovery,” the Ecuadorian team added.

The double date

On August 26, the Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) announced the call of the 40 players of the Venezuelan national team for the matches against Bolivia and Uruguay, scheduled for September 5 and 10, respectively, as part of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

For the first meeting, the Vinotinto will travel to La Paz, Bolivia, and will face the Verde in the municipal stadium of El Alto, in Villa Ingenio, more than 4,000 meters above sea level.

Fernando Costa, president of the Bolivian Football Federation (FBF), recently confirmed that the stadium has been remodeled and is ready to host Venezuela, the first team to play a World Cup qualifying match at the sports center.

The Vinotinto will then host Uruguay at the Monumental Stadium in Maturín, Monagas state, according to the schedule set by Conmebol.

Venezuela is in fourth place in the South American Qualifiers table after adding eight points.

The national team debuted with a defeat against Colombia. But then they beat Paraguay. After that they tied 1-1 against Brazil, beat Chile 3-0 and tied 0-0 against Ecuador.

On the right foot

La Vinotinto finished its participation in the 2024 Copa América with a perfect score, remaining undefeated in the group stage for the first time in its history.

During their match against Ecuador they won 2-1. They then beat Mexico 1-0 in a close match, and finally beat Jamaica 3-0.

However, they bowed out of the tournament after losing a penalty shootout (3-4) against Canada in the quarter-finals after having tied the score at one goal in regular time.

Four days after the Copa América ended, on July 18, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) updated the ranking of the national teams and the Vinotinto rose 17 places. It is currently at number 37. This was the biggest rise in positions for a national team during this FIFA window.
