Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) defended Israel’s right to self-defense once morest the background of the attacks by the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip following the end of the humanitarian ceasefire. “Our position is that this means that Israel must also have the right to defeat Hamas and prevent it from continuing to carry out such terrorist acts.”he said on Monday in Berlin following the second German-Brazilian government consultations at a joint appearance with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Scholz said he and Lula agreed that the attack violated the principles of humanity. This cannot be accepted. They had advocated for humanitarian breaks in the war, he added, and added: “But not that it ends now, but that Israel must be able to continue to pursue the possibility of defeating Hamas.” A two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians “will certainly not work with a Hamas that wants to attack Israel and ban ten million people who live in Israel from living in their state.”
According to the official translation, Lula said the Palestinian people were paying the price for Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack. He accused the United Nations of not intervening. “You can only discuss peace if you sit down at the negotiating table. That is the role of the United Nations and it is simply not fulfilling that role.” The only solution to the conflict is a two-state settlement, said Lula, but added: “I have the impression that the solution is still a long way away.”
Lula said he wanted to discuss reform of the UN Security Council in the G20 round of leading and emerging economic powers, which Brazil has chaired since December 1st. Germany, Brazil, Japan and India as well as two or three countries from the African continent should be represented in the UN Security Council. “The UN World Security Council is not the privilege of the UN founders. (…) The geopolitics of 1945 is not the geopolitics of 2023. Many things have changed in the world.”
Scholz said that he expected the Brazilian G20 presidency to “make progress in one area or another” in efforts to reform the UN Security Council. (sda/dpa)
