Chance of dangerous smog in Lahore for a few days: Meteorological Department

According to the Meteorological Department, the smog will change from ‘worse to terrible’ in the coming week.

Chief Meteorologist Lahore Chaudhry Aslam while talking to Independent Urdu warned that there is no chance of rain for at least the next five to seven days and it will increase the proportion of pollution in the air and the smog will become a worse situation. will be adopted.’

According to the US Air Quality Index on October 29, Lahore ranked first in the list of the most polluted cities in the world with 374 in the morning and 290 in the afternoon.

Naseem-ur-Rehman, director of the Punjab Environment Department, while talking to Independent Urdu, said, “In the next 12 to 13 days, whatever you want, the smog is going to happen. At that time, the roads are being sprayed, many factories have been closed.” , action is being taken on kilns, FIRs are being cut, farmers who set fire to fields are being fined one lakh, but this is not happening in the neighboring country, there are also fires in fields, Amritsar and In other nearby cities where the fields are on fire and the wind is blowing towards us, it has a direct effect on us.’

“At the time when the fires in the fields are at their peak, the level of pollution in the air naturally goes up. Our effort is to minimize it.’

He said that if we compare 2021 with 2022, the situation in 2022 was much better and if we compare 22 with 2023, now we are going to enter this zone, but I hope that this time our air quality index will be better than last year. The year will be better.

Naseem-ur-Rehman further said that ‘in the morning the index went to around 400 but in the afternoon it went up to 254, but the index is not viewed as such because it keeps changing, its average reading is taken after 24 hours. is.’

‘If we say that the reading came out to be four hundred and fifty, then that four hundred and fifty was the reading of a certain time which went up and then came down. The problem of smog remains throughout the year, but the problem of advancing air quality index remains high from October 26 to November 10 every year. It includes some of our local elements, some natural and some elements from the neighboring country are added.’

‘When the paddy crop is harvested, the farmers set fire in the fields to destroy its remains because the field has to be cultivated again with wheat. Since it is only 10-12 days, instead of using machines, the farmers remove the remaining paddy by hand and set fire to the rest of the field, due to which the level of pollution in our air goes up.

According to Chief Meteorologist Lahore Chaudhry Aslam, ‘Smog depends on the weather, if there is no such weather, smog does not form. An example of this is that during the wheat harvest in summer, the pollution ratio is still high, but since the temperature is high at that time, it prevents the pollution from becoming smog. Therefore, pollution takes the form of smog.

According to Sajid Bashir, spokesperson of Punjab Environment Department, devices have been installed in four places in Lahore to measure air quality, which are at Punjab University, Town Hall, Jail Road and a mobile van is included in them.

He said that currently the main cause of smog is transport, which is contributing 70% to the city’s smog. Ten percent is atmospheric, while more than 20 percent of smog is caused by fires in fields. Seventy percent of Punjab is rural area where there are fields, when they catch fire together, smog will be generated.

“We have checked 1200 industries since August 1, out of which we have closed around 500. About 12,000 kilns were checked across Punjab, of which we have closed about 2,200.

He said that the Environment Department alone cannot bring down the smog, but all the relevant institutions have to take steps to remedy it.
