Champions League – SID rule corner: penalty kick

London (SID) – The controversial hand penalty once morest Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16 second leg of the Champions League at Chelsea (0: 2) has been repeated according to the rules. The text stipulates that when executed, all players except the kicker and goalkeeper are “at least 9.15 m from the penalty spot, behind the penalty spot, inside the field of play and outside the penalty area”.

Rule 14 of the rules of the German Football Association (DFB) also stipulates offenses and sanctions. “If an offense is committed by a player from each team,” it reads, “the penalty kick will be retaken unless one of the players commits a more serious offense (e.g. improper cheating).”

When national player Kai Havertz shot the ball, several BVB players had already run into the penalty area, including Salih Özcan, who intervened to clear the ball following it bounced off the right goalpost. A Chelsea player was also well into the penalty area when the shot was taken – even if the ball had gone into the goal referee Danny Makkelie (Netherlands) should have ordered a replay.
