You don’t have to wait long until the drawing. The matchups for the round of 16 will be drawn tomorrow, Monday, December 18th, in Nyon, Switzerland. It starts at 12 p.m.

The most important thing in advance: The 16 teams are divided into two draw pots – one with the eight first-placed teams from the group phase, one with the eight second-placed teams. In each pairing in the round of 16, a group winner meets a group runner-up. The two lottery pots look like this:

However, there are two things to keep in mind: Teams that have already met in the group phase cannot be drawn as a pairing; the same applies to clubs from the same national association. For example, FC Bayern cannot meet FC Copenhagen once more in the round of 16 or be drawn once morest RB Leipzig.

What does this mean for the German clubs? Since Bayern and Dortmund both won their groups, the possible opponents look largely the same. A few hammerless ones are waiting for Leipzig:
- Bayern’s possible opponents: Paris Saint-Germain, PSV Eindhoven, SSC Napoli, Inter Milan, Lazio Rome, FC Porto
- Dortmund’s possible opponents: FC Copenhagen, PSV Eindhoven, SSC Napoli, Inter Milan, Lazio Rome, FC Porto
- Leipzig’s possible opponents: Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid, FC Arsenal
Because some duels are excluded, there are slightly different probabilities for different pairings. At FC Bayern, PSG is slightly more likely at 17.3 percent than the other opponents (16.5 percent), at BVB this applies to FC Copenhagen. Nothing is happening for Leipzig between potential opponents.
