The squads of the 32 teams involved in the UEFA Champions League group stage must be registered by midnight on Friday 2 September. We will explain everything to you.

When should clubs register their squad?

Each club must provide two player lists containing details such as each player’s shirt number, date of birth or nationality. List A must be sent to the club association for verification and validation, then must be transferred to UEFA before Friday 2 September at midnight. The same process applies to List B (more details below), which must be sent in no later than midnight the day before each game.

When does the transfer window close?

The transfer window of each association regarding teams qualifying for the UEFA Champions League group stage varies by nation. However, all clubs must register their squad by midnight September 2. Any players transferred following this date will not qualify.

Can clubs register players who have taken part in the qualifying phase of the UEFA Champions League or any other men’s competition?

Yes. A player fielded in the preliminary round, first, second or third round or play-offs for the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Europa Conference League may play for another club in the group stage UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Europa Conference League.

Winners of the play-offs

The six teams qualified via the play-offs are not obliged to keep the same squad for the group stage. Indeed, following each qualifying round, clubs are allowed to register a completely new team.

Who can be on List A?

No club may register more than 25 players on List A during the season. this list must include at least two goalkeepers.

At least eight places on List A are reserved exclusively for “locally trained players”. If a club has fewer than eight locally trained players in its squad, the maximum number of players on List A is reduced accordingly.

What is a “locally trained player”?

There are two types of players:

1. Club-trained players – players who were in club teams for three years between the ages of 15 and 21.

2. Association-trained players – players who were with another club in the same association for three years between the ages of 15 and 21. No club may register more than four association-trained players among their eight locally trained List A players.

What is List B?

A player may be registered on List B if he was born on or following 1 January 2001 and if, on the date of his registration with UEFA, he was qualified to play for the club concerned for a period uninterrupted for at least two years since the age of 15 (players aged 16 can be registered on List B if they have been dismissed from the club during the previous two years without interruption).

Each club must include at least two goalkeepers on List A and at least three in total (Lists A and B combined).

Each club can register an unlimited number of players on List B during the season. The list must be transmitted until midnight at the latest the day before a match.

Can clubs change their squad during the season?

Yes, if they qualify for the knockout stage. Before the round of 16, before midnight on February 2, clubs will be able to validate a maximum of three changes.

These three players may have been fielded for another club in the qualifying phase, in the play-offs or in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Europa Conference League.

The limit of 25 players on List A remains in place, as well as the quotas of eight locally trained players.
