To mark the 10th anniversary of the Champions Hockey League club format, we spoke to the person responsible, Martin Baumann, regarding the importance, but also regarding the concerns and opportunities.
The Champions Hockey League has been in the final phase of its 10th edition since it was relaunched for the 2014/15 season. In conversation with the Swiss CEO, Martin Baumann SRF Sport the product under the microscope on the day of the two semi-final first legs. It’s regarding taking stock, making necessary improvements and having a big vision.
Precisely because the international club format has a very high level of sport, its raison d’être is certainly not in question.

- From a sporting perspective, Baumann sees the competition as a model of success. Nevertheless, he still sees potential, especially with regard to the audience turnout.
- As a positive example, he highlights the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, who made it to the quarterfinals, “ran a great campaign and traveled abroad with 600 to 800 fans.”
- It is sometimes the job of marketing to explicitly promote the stars who are little known outside the country’s borders and to convey the enthusiasm to the fans. “We still have to give ourselves time and do all of our homework. Then the product will go through the roof.”

- … that the product comes at a price for the participating clubs precisely because of the travel costs, but an impressive 3.5 million in prize money is also paid out.
- … that in Germany the competition is referred to as the “premier league” and yet it cannot be compared with the Champions League in football because the dimensions are completely different.

- It took courage to introduce the three rule changes. According to the Zuger, it’s also regarding “being different, offering the fan something new and not just copying the way the league operates.”
