Qualifying for the 2023 F1 opening round, the Bahrain Grand Prix was held on the 4th local time.

The local Bahrain International Circuit has passed sunset time and the outside temperature has dropped to 24 degrees.

As the 18-minute Q1 began, the two AlphaTauri cars of Yuki Tsunoda and Nick de Vries were the first to go out onto the track.

First, Tsunoda marks 1:32.132. Immediately following Tsunoda, Carlos Sainz and De Vries set the time, a part came off Charles Leclerc’s front wing and fell on the track, causing a red flag.

After a few minutes of interruption, Q1 resumed with 13 minutes remaining. From here, each driver continued to set their best laps one following another, and Carlos Sainz took the lead at the remaining 6 minutes following all the lap times had been set. Tsunoda improved his time to 1:31.747, which put him in 9th position.

Drivers who haven’t put out the top time will start the last attack from here.

Tsunoda also marked 1:31.400 in the final short run, and was very close to advancing to Q2. Logan Sargent, Kevin Magnussen, Oscar Piastri, Nick de Vries and Pierre Guthrie did not reach 15th place. All three rookies, who became regulars for the first time this season, were eliminated in Q1.

As for Sargent, he was eliminated from Q1 at the same time as Lando Norris in 15th. Gasly finished last in Q1 due to a track limit violation. Tsunoda advanced to Q2 with the 8th fastest time in Q1.

In the following Q2, while there were some machines attacking with used softs, Tsunoda finished the first attack and was 14th. With less than 3 minutes remaining, all 15 cars entered the last attack of Q2.

Tsunoda didn’t have any new software left in Q2, so he mightn’t improve his time on used tires. A 1:32.510 put him in 14th place and he was eliminated in Q2. Norris, Valtteri Bottas, Chou Guanyu, Tsunoda, and Alexander Albon were the 5 cars that were eliminated from Q2 without finishing 10th.

And in qualifying Q3, which decides the top 10 grid, Max Verstappen marked 1:29.897 and entered the 1 minute 29 seconds range. Charles Leclerc was second with a 1:30.000.

Fernando Alonso enters the attack lap here with less than 5 minutes remaining. It was the 4th fastest time, 0.439 seconds slower than the top Verstappen.

On the last attack, Verstappen improved his time to 1:29.708. Perez was second by 0.138 seconds, with Red Bull on the front row.

Leclerc was 3rd and Sainz was 4th, with Ferraris on the second row. And Alonso’s time was fifth fastest. George Russell in 6th, Lewis Hamilton in 7th, Lance Stroll in 8th, Esteban Ocon in 9th and Nico Hulkenberg in 10th in the top 10.
