Champion River Plate and Boca Juniors win in the Argentine soccer league

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 20 (Archyde.com) – River Plate, the current Argentine soccer champion, won its second consecutive victory in the League Cup on Sunday following beating Newell’s Old Boys 2-0 as a visitor, in a day in which Boca Juniors beat Rosario Central 2-1.

Within the framework of the third day, River opened the scoring at 72 minutes through Colombian Juan Fernando Quintero following an error by goalkeeper Mauricio Arboleda.

The second goal of the team led by Marcelo Gallardo came three minutes later through the Paraguayan Robert Rojas.

“We knew it was going to be very difficult, but I’m happy because the team won and I was able to help, with a goal that gave us relief on the field,” Quintero told local television following the win.

In another match on Sunday, Boca Juniors won 2-1 at home once morest Rosario Central thanks to goals from Carlos Izquierdoz and Colombian Frank Fabra at 50 and 81 minutes.

Central’s discount was scored by the Argentine-Mexican Luca Martínez Dupuy at 86 minutes with a header.

“In the first half we were not good, but in the second we changed and improved. We took the victory, suffering a little at the end, but victory in the end,” said coach Sebastián Battaglia at a press conference.

On Saturday, Estudiantes de La Plata beat Lanús 2-1 and Arsenal de Sarandí beat Huracán by the same score, while Vélez Sarsfield and Independiente equalized goalless.
