In the ordinary session of the Chamber held this Monday, the motion of censure directed at the table led by Karol Cariola (PC), and which also includes Gaspar Rivas (ind.-exPDG) and Eric Aedo (DC), was rejected.
The initiative was discarded with a total of 76 votes once morest, 69 in favor and 7 abstentions.
The reason for the accusation, presented by legislators from the Republican Party and the Social Christian Party (PSC), focused on the alleged interference of the minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Álvaro Elizalde (PS), in the negotiations at the table, following Rivas affirmed that the Secretary of State had offered the first vice presidency to the People’s Party.
The deputy later retracted his statements.
“At no time has there been an offer from Minister Elizalde, since what is already contained in an agreement cannot be created, invented or offered,” he stated in a video shared on his X account.
Despite Rivas’s clarification, the opposition quickly criticized what it considered an interference by the Executive in the autonomy of the Legislative Branch, with the PSC and the Republican Party announcing the failed censorship.
“We do what the law requires us to do”
The representative for Ñuble and one of the promoters of the initiative, Sara Concha, thanked “those who have the same commitment to representing citizens, to respecting the laws and the Chilean Constitution. We regret that we voted once morest the censure, not taking into consideration the serious mistake that occurred in the election of this table. I hope that there is also a reflection on their part, indeed we have to coordinate the dialogue more, it is part of what also calls us when we have to carry this out, but I am left with the peace of mind that in the end it is the citizens who have to judge whether or not we do the work that they have mandated us as a nation, because we are representatives of the citizens,” he stated.
He added that he regrets that many times “there is a certain type of cowardice to not advance in those functions that are established for us, even by the regulations of our corporation that we represent today. We hope that the presidency and the board can carry out the greatest coordination to be able to carry out those bills that are important for citizens, knowing that we did not waste time, because we are effectively doing what the law mandates, what The regulations mandate us, and of course, beyond what happened today, we want to continue advancing in pursuit of the needs of our citizens,” he stated.
“Unwise measures”
From Chile Vamos, deputy Frank Sauerbaum (RN), stated that yesterday’s result was obtained because “Republicans and the Social Christian Party rushed to take a measure without consultation with the largest parties in Chile Vamos, such as Renovación Nacional, the UDI and Evópoli, and they have a dispute between them as to who hits the government faster and harder, without measuring the consequences,” he said.
According to the legislator, “they have presented permanent measures that do not have sufficient support in the Chamber of Deputies, not only do they waste our time, but they also leave our sector in a bad light. We call on the sectors of Republicans and the Social Christian Party to be more cautious, more strategic in the opposition that we are carrying out, because in unity with the more moderate sectors of the center we can make a good opposition that collaborates so that the country go well, and also to reflect that today we are a majority in the country that is once morest this government, and that the Communist Party does not like. From the UDI, deputy Cristóbal Martínez expressed that “it is the promoters of this censorship who must take responsibility for having granted a double victory to the Communist Party in less than a week. We voted in favor because we agreed on the substance of the censorship, but in no case with the way it was presented,” he highlighted.
