The Chamber of Deputies approved the petition made by a group of parliamentarians to initiate a process of removal of the director of the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH), Consuelo Contreras, and the advisor of the organization Francisco Ugás.

According to Radio Cooperativa, the initiative, promoted by the Chile Vamos parties (Renovación Nacional, UDI and Evópoli), was approved by 66 votes in favor, 51 once morest and eight abstentions.

The petition will now be sent to the Supreme Court, which is the seat that will decide the permanence of Contreras and Ugás, according to current legislation. The president of the Chamber, Karol Cariola (PC), confirmed that it would be sent today before 6:00 p.m.

This request for removal points out that both councilors incurred in “manifest and inexcusable negligence in the exercise of their functions” by promoting a complaint for the crime of influence peddling that implicated former minister Mario Desbordes, former RN helmsman.

Government reactions

In this regard, the Minister of Justice, Luis Cordero, stressed that “the allegations before the Supreme Court are not political, but rather legal, and therefore, it is up to those who have requested the Court to prove how this legal cause is fulfilled or qualified.”

“We regret the decision taken today by the Chamber of Deputies,” was Contreras’ first reaction, who argued that “we are convinced that the complaints filed have been made in the legitimate use of our powers, that we have a broad mandate.”

“For example, we have filed more than 3,000 complaints for unlawful coercion and 40 complaints for child abduction,” he said.
