Challenges of Public Transport for Families with Children in Brussels: Insights from a Minister’s Journey

On Friday, the League of Families proposed to Brussels Minister in charge of mobility Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) to cross Brussels by public transport with a baby in a stroller and a four-year-old girl. The starting point for the crossing was set at Place Flagey at 8:15 a.m., in order to make the journey at rush hour and in realistic conditions. The minister’s mission? Arrive on time to drop off your two substitute children at daycare and school. To do this, she took a tram between Flagey (Ixelles) and the Pont du Germoir, a bus to Place Royale, a second tram to the Parc metro stop and a metro to Montgomery.

The route was not easy at all. Between the narrow doors of the old 81 trams, the missing or broken elevators and the crowded 95 bus, the minister sometimes had to rely on the help of other passengers to enter the desired transport. The daily newspaper also notes an “absurdity”: strollers are in theory prohibited on escalators. Problem is, in some stations, escalators constitute the only access to the platforms due to the lack of a working elevator or staircase. The minister, like other parents faced with this journey, therefore had to ignore this ban in order to be able to complete her journey.

If the minister ultimately did well, experience clearly shows that public transport remains, despite the real efforts of the Stib, too unsuitable for families with children. We will now see if this experience will have concrete repercussions on mobility in Brussels.
