Challenges of November Rain: Impact on Outdoor Work and Tree Nurseries in Neufchâteau

2023-11-29 13:00:00

The significant amounts of rain that fell during the month of November make working conditions difficult for people working outdoors. This is the case for workers: construction sites are falling behind schedule due to the very muddy terrain on which they have to work.

And another profession is facing big difficulties this year in particular: fir tree producers, who have a lot of work at the moment.
This is demonstrated by these images sent by Jonathan Rigaux, fir tree producer in Neufchâteau, and president of the Union Ardennaise des Pépinièreistes. His field of fir trees is completely flooded.

“These are working conditions that have never been seen before! 80, 90, 1 meter deep rut sometimes. It’s war as they say”he says.

We can see his tractor pulling a trailer loaded with dozens of fir trees which finds itself stuck in the mud. The tractor wheels, half submerged, are completely slipping. The use of construction equipment equipped with tracks was necessary to pull the tractor and its trailer out of the pond.

“It’s the crane which at one point comes with steel tracks, very wide, like a snowplow, which has a much wider lift, and which must tow the tracers to get out”explains Jonathan Rigaux.

Even country roads are inaccessible: “We didn’t have a river here, we’re on stagnant water. Even a tractor won’t get there, no matter how powerful the tractor is.”

In total, 380 hectares of fir trees are to be cut, and they are eagerly awaited by Jonathan’s customers, who takes the situation with a smile. At the end of our report, it is he who finds himself mired, a shoe stuck in the slush. “Long live Christmas”he concludes with a laugh.
