Higher salary in the north of the country, geographical distance and now a separate school calendar. Immersion education in the French Community struggles to recruit native speakers. Between 2018 and 2021, the attraction of students for immersive courses has however evolved by 20%.

Enteaching for more than ten years in an immersion school, with children educated in another language system, I will be leaving French-language education next year. Concerns had been expressed as soon as the reform of school timetables was announced: might immersion education be maintained with the existence of differences in the school calendar between the north and the south of the country? In the Brussels Region, where many immersion teachers are Dutch-speaking, the situation seems critical. “Only in my school, we are three teachers to leave French-speaking education at the next start of the school year”, attests Charlotte, a Dutch teacher.
