MEXICO CITY (EFE).— The main challenge for the housing policy of the virtual president-elect of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, will be to find land on which to build at least one million homes that she promised during her electoral campaign, said Edna Elena Vega, an official of the Secretariat (Ministry) of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu).
“The challenges are enormous (for Claudia’s next housing policy), I would say that one of the main challenges is precisely the land on which to build a million new homes,” she said at a press conference.
The Undersecretary of Territorial and Agrarian Planning of Sedatu mentioned that during the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, 3.63 million housing loans were invested, equivalent to 1.5 billion Mexican pesos.
He specified that of the total loans granted between 2019 and 2024, 2.6 million, equivalent to 291.3 million Mexican pesos, were granted by the National Workers’ Housing Fund Institute (Infonavit), which provides services to formal workers.
Meanwhile, the Housing Fund of the Institute of Social Security and Services for State Workers (Fovissste) granted 274,022 loans for 217.3 million Mexican pesos.
For his part, the head of Infonavit, Carlos Martínez, estimated that the organization could invest up to 250,000 million pesos to help Claudia achieve her ambition of building one million homes.
Edna Elena explained that these resources would help build 500,000 homes that would be accessible to formal Mexican workers and would generate at least one million jobs per year.
Housing Programs
Sedatu pointed out that there are cities with a greater need for housing for all families.
Necessary constructions
Iztapalapa, in Mexico City; Ecatepec, in the State of Mexico; Juárez and Chihuahua, both in the State of Chihuahua; Tijuana and Mexicali, in the State of Baja California, on the border with the United States; and Puebla and Acapulco, in Puebla and Guerrero, are the states that need housing the most.
