Challenges Faced by Pope Francis: Health and Travel Amidst Aging Popes

2023-09-29 12:57:00

At the moment, Pope Francis is more eager to travel than he has been for a long time: he has just returned from a short visit to the French port city of Marseille, and at the beginning of September he even traveled to distant Mongolia for four days. But his age and his health are increasingly troubling the Holy Father: in June he had to undergo an intestinal operation at the Roman Gemelli Clinic following he had to stay in the hospital bed shortly before Easter due to pneumonia and bronchitis. He will turn 87 on December 17th: since 1896, i.e. 127 years, no pope has reached such an age in office. John Paul II died in 2005 at the age of 85, Benedict XVI. resigned as Pope in 2013 when he was not quite 86 years old.
