Since June 7, the definitive one-way street setting of rue Joffre (which connects the Opéra and place Saint-Lambert but no longer allows this direction of traffic) has complicated the lives of motorists and direct residents, who now have to a big detour to take the highway or reach Sainte-Walburge. But, since the bus tunnel in Place Saint-Lambert is no longer accessible either, this also poses a problem for ambulances, which must in particular reach the Citadel hospital or carry out an intervention near Place Saint-Lambert, coming from boulevards d’Avroy and de la Sauvenière.
“It lengthens. We must now go up the highway via Sainte-Marie and Burenville“, we are confirmed to the Courtois ambulances. “With all the work in Liège, this is already problematic. There, it adds to it. If we have to go to the Palace for surgery, the patient will have to wait for the ambulance a little longer.“According to a paramedic, it’s an extra 2 or 3 minutes during peak hours for a priority vehicle.
A resident of rue Joffre, despite being a fan of soft mobility, believes for his part that we are going too far by not allowing cars to leave the hypercentre by this natural way which was the axis passing through the Cadran and allowed access to Vottem and Burenville. He therefore wrote to Alderman Foret (Mobility) proposing as a solution to reverse the direction of traffic on rue Haute-Sauvenière. “I suspect that there are certainly constraints to this, but it would bring the hypercentre closer to the hospital centers of Liège“, he believes. “The one-way layout of rue Joffre has considerably distanced the hypercentre of Liège from emergency services.”
And to attach a photo taken the night of Wednesday June 14 to Friday June 15, from the balcony of his apartment, where we see an ambulance going up Rue Joffre in the wrong direction, lights and siren on, trying to force the passage to a bus. “She finally bypassed the bus passing on the sidewalk.”
