Many people can play board games. Inventing board games is more difficult. Getting a nomination for “Game of the Year” with your own board game is something very few people do. The Heidenreichsteiner Johannes Krenner succeeded together with Markus Slawitscheck from Hofamt-Priel.

During the pandemic-related lockdowns, the duo developed the game “Challengers!”, published by Kosmos-Verlag. It was nominated for Game of the Year 2023 in the Kennerspiel category. The Critics’ Prize is considered to be the world’s most important award in the parlor games industry. “We’re really happy and would do the game good if it works,” says Krenner. The nomination alone is a great honor.

“Challengers!” has already won a French game prize

The award will be presented on July 16 in Berlin. The Kennerspiel category is aimed at people who already have experience with modern board games. In “Challengers!”, one to eight people play a tournament in which the players put together a team and have them compete against each other. In February, “Challengers!” already convinced the expert jury of the French games award “As D’or” with its uniqueness. In Cannes, it won first place in the Insider category.

Johannes Krenner works professionally as a game developer, and also as a graphic designer. He lives in Vienna and Heidenreichstein. Even before “Challengers!” he published in the games publisher Ravensburger, which NÖN reported. Incidentally, Krenner and Slawitscheck met each other through their shared passion of developing games. “Challengers!” is their first joint work and was the impetus for their friendship. “Noobs in Space”, another entertaining game by the two authors, has also been available in specialist shops since March.
