Chairman of the ruling Social Democratic Party (SDSM), Dimitar Kovacevski noted that opposition VMRO-DPMNE chairman Christian Mickoski’s views on the country’s constitutional name might create problems with the Prespa Agreement in the future due to his stubborn stance not to use the new constitutional name of the country (North Macedonia).
Christian Mickoski, answering the question of how he will name the country, at home and abroad, in case he is elected prime minister of the country, stated emphatically that for him the name of the country will always remain only “Macedonia”.
“I don’t know why we should change our behavior if we get the trust of the citizens. For me, Macedonia is and will be Macedonia. There is no doubt regarding that. My ancestors will be proud of me, for what I do for my people and my country. There is no doubt regarding that. I am not changing my positions” said the leader of VMRO-DPMNE.
Dimitar Kovacevski replied to this that Christian Mickoski cannot change positions, since he has no position at all.
“When you don’t have a place, you can’t change it. This is its advantage. When you have attitude, then you make decisions. The Prespa Agreement is the result of 30 years of work, during which we had a lawyer from the USA as mediator. Matthew Nimitz did not reach the agreement. The agreement was reached by two leaders, who reached an agreement, shook hands and settled the relations between the two countries. This is leadership behavior. We remained Macedonians and the Macedonian language is Macedonian, while we became a member of NATO,” said the leader of the Social Democratic Party.
According to opinion polls, the right-wing opposition party VMRO-DPMNE is leading the ruling “Social Democratic Party” (SDSM) by a significant margin, ahead of the parliamentary elections.
The parliamentary elections to be held in May will coincide with the second round of the presidential elections in North Macedonia, in which according to all indications the current president of the country and candidate of SDSM, Stevo Pendarovski, and the candidate of VMRO-DPMNE, Gordana Silianowska.
