Chung Eui-sun, chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, was selected as the most influential person in the global automobile industry this year.
MotorTrend, a world-renowned automotive magazine, announced on the 12th that Chairman Chung Eui-sun was selected as the “Person of the Year 2023.” Motor Trend unveiled the 50 people of the ‘2023 Motor Trend Power List’ on the same day, and announced that Chairman Chung Eui-sun was ranked first.
Every year, Motor Trend publishes a power list of 50 influential people in the global automobile industry, and names the most influential person among them as ‘Person of the Year’. The Motor Trend Power List is created and ranked through rigorous evaluation and closed voting by Motor Trend editors and advisors.
Founded in the United States in 1949, Motor Trend is the most influential media in the automobile field, and its reliability and influence are recognized in the industry through magazines and online editions that are published over 1 million copies per month.
Motor Trend explained the reason for the selection, saying, “Chairman Chung Eui-sun is fulfilling his role as a leader in the field of electric vehicles and future mobility with an insight into where the world and industry is heading and a passion to create a better world.”
Chairman Chung Eui-sun usually said, “The essential mission pursued by Hyundai Motor Group is to realize everyone’s dream of ‘safe and free movement and a peaceful life'”. It is redefining the mobility field in new fields such as advanced air mobility (AAM), smart city, hydrogen energy solutions, artificial intelligence (AI), and software.
Motor Trend also emphasized, “Chairman Chung Eui-sun is leading the Hyundai Motor Group into a new era and is showing more than a CEO of an automobile company.”
Motor Trend also conveyed the evaluation of Chairman Chung Eui-sun as “a realistic yet friendly innovator and visionary” and said, “Chairman Eui-sun Chung has raised the Hyundai Motor Group to a new level. Chairman Chung Eui-sun, his vision, and the Hyundai Motor Group, which is becoming a great company, are showing their presence.”

Motor Trend said, “If Tesla started to popularize electric vehicles, Hyundai Motor Company increased consumer accessibility and revitalized the market by introducing cool electric vehicles with various models, styles, and price ranges.”

Meanwhile, in the 2023 Motor Trend Power List, in addition to Chairman Chung Eui-sun, Hyundai Motor Group CCO (Chief Creative Officer) President Luc Donckerwolke (3rd) and Hyundai Motor Company COO (Chief Operation Officer) President Jose Muñoz (10 Above), Hyundai Design Center Vice President Lee Sang-yeop (28th), and Kia Design Center Vice President Karim Habib (44th) were also named.
The power list also included GM Chairman Mary Barra (2nd), Stellantis Chairman Carlos Tavares (4th), and Tesla CEO Elon Musk (42nd).
