Chahuán describes President Boric’s statements about irregularities in Mateluna’s trial as “the highest seriousness” and called on the president to apologize

The senator and president of National Renewal (RN), Francisco Chahuán, referred to the suspension of the participation of Chile Vamos in the table of transversal security commitment led by the Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Carolina Tohá, following President Boric pardoned twelve prisoners of the social outbreak and the former member of the Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front (FPMR), Jorge Mateluna Rojas.

In the followingnoon of this Monday, it was the president himself who invited the opposition to retake the security table. From Brazil, and following holding a bilateral meeting with Luiz Inácio Lula de Silva, the Head of State indicated that “I want to say to those who intend to put into play a short and long-term agenda in terms of security, by exclusive decisions of the President of the Republic, that they are completely wrong. Here I invite you to return to the table. Chile cannot continue waiting for us politicians to end our fights in order to have concrete measures”.

Considering the president’s call, Senator Chahuán stated on CNN Prime that “the three directives of the parties of Chile Vamos, UDI, RN and Evópoli, we have resolved to suspend our participation in the security roundtable. First, because we see a President who has not had the capacity to overcome the complex of one of his own government coalitions to confront the issue of security forcefully. Second, because the pardons granted are a mockeryFundamentally, those of us who are working for a security agenda”.

Despite the fact that the conglomerate announced its suspension at the security table, whose new meeting will take place during the day of this Tuesday, the RN helmsman affirmed that since this Tuesday the opposition bloc will raise its own security agenda.

When asked regarding the call by President Boric and other political figures to resume work on the security agenda, Chahuán pointed out that “the lack of consistency of the government, the lack of ability to empathize with the victims, to always put itself on the part of the government of President Boric with respect to the position of the perpetrators, show that they have no real interest in moving forward with the security agenda”.

Chahuán also criticized the president’s decision on the thirteen pardons granted. “We believe that this demonstrates the lack of consistency that the government has had in dealing with public security issues, and in this context, We believe that it was the President of the Republic himself who put an end to that discussion table”.

Finally, the leader of the Antonio Varas store added that “here less communication noise is required and more urgency to bills to give the police more tools and give them back the authority to deal with crime.”

In the trial of Jorge Mateluna there were irregularities and an evaluation of the evidence that was not up to justice”.

That was the explanation that President Boric gave this followingnoon from Brazil following being consulted for the reasons behind the pardon that he gave to the ex-frontist Jorge Mateluna (48), convicted of robbing a bank branch in 2013.

In relation to this defense made by the president when granting the benefit to Mateluna, Senator Chahuán specified “that a President of the Republic questions the independence of another State power, which is independent, I find it absolutely serious. It also seems serious to me, because Mr. Mateluna even appealed to the Supreme Court for clarification, which is the last resort, one that does not have a deadline and finally confirmed the ruling.

“It seems very serious to me that the President of the Republic questions a ruling of the Supreme Court, which is another independent power, That seems to me to be of the highest seriousness and I expect an apology from the President”, concluded the president of RN.
