The president of the transition in Chad, Mahamat Idriss Deby, on Tuesday called on Senegal to support him for the next stages of the transition.
On a friendly and working visit to Chad since Monday evening, the President of Senegal Macky Sall, who is also the current chairman of the African Union, had a one-on-one meeting on Tuesday with Mahamat Idriss Déby.
According to a press release from the Chadian presidency, General Mahamat Idriss Deby seized the opportunity to ask for Senegal’s support to complete the transition.
In his speech delivered during the audience granted to the President of the Republic of Senegal, the head of the Chadian junta requested the support of the “Senegalese President, for the continuation of the political support of the African Union to the process of transition, but also his personal support to be the catalyst in the mobilization of the resources required to complete the remaining stages of the transition, in order to lead to a happy outcome, expected, wanted and hoped for by all”.
The transitional president of Chad stressed that his country is “at a historic turning point which calls for the solidarity of brotherly countries, including the sister Republic of Senegal”.
General Mahamat Idriss Deby noted that Chad knows how to count on the support of the country of Teranga, “which has always been able to contribute to its development, in particular through the quality training provided for the benefit of a large number of Chadian executives, in the various university disciplines, some of whom today hold eminent positions here, in this high place of the Republic”.
Taking the floor in turn, Senegalese President Macky Sall congratulated General Mahamat Idriss Déby for the “positive development” of the Doha peace agreement signed between the Chadian rebel movements and the transitional government of Chad.
Macky Sall also encouraged the Chadian head of state to continue in this dynamic because “it is the best choice, the choice for peace and development”.
The current President of the African Union, Macky Sall called on all the Chadian rebel groups that have not yet signed the Doha peace agreement to join the inclusive national dialogue so that the conclusions of this meeting scheduled for August 20 are “the best for Chad, the best for Africa and give us the best chance of achieving an inclusive, comprehensive and lasting peace”.
The African Union (AU) announced, Sunday in a press release, the dispatch of a delegation to Chad with the mission to assess the situation of the transition. This delegation led by Macky Sall will meet, for this purpose, all political actors, opposition and majority, as well as representatives of civil society.
